Many databases start as Excel speadsheets. Too many stay that way. An Excel speadsheet is an excellent tool for analyzing and displaying data. It is not suitable for securely storing data and preserving data integrity, except in very small quantities.
If any of the following are true you should consider converting your speadsheet to an Access database.
You are storing contact details, names, phone numbers etc.
You are storing data that will never change e.g. the price of a stock on a certain date.
Data is stored in several worksheets with links of some type between them.
There is a need to regularly extract subsets of data.
You have several users who update or review data.
The speadsheet has become very large and complex and is generating errors.
Designing and implementing a database can be a higly specialised and skillful task. We have a lot of experience in this area and would be happy to help. There are a few simple rules and guidlines which, if followed, will pay dividends later in ease of use and avoiding problems.
